2.1. Chat Tool
Adapted from a message sent by Becky, Zheng Can, replying to a message from Liu Jia
- We have been using the web-based Yahoo Chat. As long as your web browser is Java-enabled, you are fine. To make sure you are able to use at least basic text functions of Yahoo Chat! Please do the following
- Apply for a Yahoo ID. (If you have already have a yahoo email address like xyz@yahoo.com(.cn). Your Yahoo Id is xyz.
- Go to http://chat.yahoo.com. Signin with your Yahoo Id at upper page.
- Click on "Enter chat room". This will bring a progressing bar showing "connecting to chat server".
- or try this link http://chat.yahoo.com/?room=Chat+Central%3a%3ameltonzu2002
- Click on "continue" once the progress reaches 100%.
- If everything goes fine, you will be brought to a chat window with a text line at the bottom that you can type in characters.
- Usually we will use the chat room name "meltonzu2002". So just type "/join meltonzu2002" and hit return. That will bring you to the right chat room we have. :D
2.2. MF Portal Mail System
- Send email to portal !@t! meltonfoundation.org using a subject line 'help' to get a list about how to use Potal mail system (also known as AMS mail system).
- Subject line that I found most useful:
- help: get an informative file on how to use the Portal mail system (old AMS)
- groups: get a list of available groups
- subscribe <group>: subscribe the discussion group
- put <group>: send the message to the members of the group
- get <group> all: get all the messages that have been send to the group
- addresses: get an email address listing of all the members in MF
- query: reach the operator behind the AMS.
- Caution: AMS does not handle multipart MIME emails. (thus no MIME attachments). Refer to the next question to set up your email client/webmail account correctly.
- Also, Updating email addresses can be done in two ways:
- Send a message to portal !@! meltonfoundation.org with a subject query:
- Logon to the portal, go Control-Panel-->e-mail Connections. One can add new addresses and configure where and how the communications from MF are delivered.
- All emails are archived in the portal and accessible when you login to the http://www.meltonfoundation.org/
- One can configure gropu email delivery options: Read on portal, send the full text, send notification, etc. via email connections in website's panel.
- Everyone of Melton Foundation Members has a <yourloginid>@meltonfoundation.org style email.
